Who is H.D. Vest?

In 1983, H.D. Vest Financial Services was founded by a CPA whose clients routinely requested financial advice regarding retirement plans and other investment strategies. Initially, he referred his clients to stockbrokers and insurance agents; however, frustrated by the fact that his clients' financial needs were often not satisfied through these referrals, he resolved to add financial services to his practice. Unfortunately, existing financial services firms did not focus on the special needs of the tax professional. For this reason, H.D. Vest Financial Services, a firm dedicated to helping tax and accounting practitioners integrate financial services into their practices, was born.

A pioneer in financial services for tax professionals

This pioneering new company, led by a visionary CPA, overcame many obstacles, including a long-entrenched rule that prohibited CPAs from accepting commissions. H.D. Vest lobbied relentlessly for three years until the AICPA and the state of Texas repealed the rule in 1987. In the years since, many other states have followed suit, opening up financial planning opportunities for tax and accounting professionals throughout the United States.
